a conversation about international relations between procrastinating siblings in opposing hemispheres...

THT: im writing a letter to lebanon write now.
F: about what?
THT: they are up for security council election tomorrow. it’s a letter of reciprocal support… they get a vote tomorrow for term 2010-2011 if they vote for (redacted) for term (redacted).
F: nice i like that forward thinking.
THT: by all accounts they may actually win and be on the sc for the first time.*
F: yay lebanon!
THT: oh, actually i just found out they are running on the asian group clean slate. hence, they are the winners and have a seat on the sc.
F: what does that mean?
THT: no one is opposing them. they did some shady lebanese backroom deals and agreed before the election to run unopposed. just try to ignore the irony that lebanon, who has had no government for the last year, is now partially responsible for ‘maintaining international peace and security.’
F: right. it just means they are cooler than nations with governments … right?
THT: well, that’s one way to look at it. they def have better falafel and gorgeous female pop singers than nations with governments, i know that much.
F: truer words were never spoken.
* i stand corrected… “The last time that Lebanon, a founding member of the UN, served on the Council was 1953-1954.”
